Owen Able Music Soundtrack
I grew up in the 80's and 90's. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that the Owen Able music soundtrack (this is to say the music that is referenced in Owen Able and The Two-Headed Dragon novel) is mostly from the 80's and 90's. Each music piece is carefully selected to depict the mood of the scene. In spite of music taste, I implore readers to listen to the music selected for each scene to more closely experience what the character is experiencing.
With that said, let me reveal the music soundtrack for my very first and brand-new Owen Able thriller novel as of this writing:
Something To Believe In by Bill Champlin (1989)
The first song in the book is from the 1989 movie called "Sing". It was the era when dance movies were quite popular, and I definitely enjoyed the music in this movie.
One of the main characters in the book is Nicole Able. She is the wife of the protagonist, Owen Able. Even though she has no financial worries and lives a lavish life, she suffered a huge loss that left her with the depressing feeling that there is nothing to live for anymore. That is until she has this meeting coming up which she is quite excited about for some reason.
Speeding towards her meeting, she plays this song full blast. The meeting gave her something to hold on to, the belief that justice for her loss is still possible.
China Roses by Enya (1995)
Nicole comes back from her meeting feeling happy and relaxed. While taking a shower, she plays the 1995 song "China Roses" from Enya.
Rush Hour by Jane Wiedlin (1988)
Nicole is frustrated by their artificial intelligence assistant called SAIMON (Super artificial intelligence micro-organism). Owen wanted to show Nicole something at the Able Foundation (their place of business), but before they drove off, Nicole had an altercation with SAIMON once again. Left upset, Owen remedies the issue and plays Rush Hour from her playlist to cheer her up.
Where The Streets Have No Name by U2 (1987)
When I first heard the song Where The Streets Have No Name by U2, I could not stop tapping my foot to the beat. I loved the guitar sound especially since I got my first electric guitar and looked up to the lead guitarist: The Edge.
Owen is away on a mission, and he asked Andrew (his best friend) to keep an eye on things. Andrew asked Nicole to meet up with a friend of his that needed closure on an unsolved case. They took a drive down to Cape Town City. Nicole played this 1987 hit song to kill time, and Andrew could not help but tap his foot to the rhythm and hum along.
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins (1986)
Who does not think of Top Gun when listening to this song by Kenny Loggins? This iconic song I may or may not include in Owen Able and The Two-Headed Dragon. This is yet to be decided even after completing the novel as the book has yet to be published at the time of writing. Kenny Loggins quickly became my favorite movie song artist of all time, churning out hit songs for movies like Footloose and Over The Top.
If I do decide to include the song in my book, it will be in an action scene with Owen Able. Saimon decided to play the song, feeling that it is quite fitting at the time. Not that Owen agreed on this that much.
Through The Trees by Ryan Levine (2009)
The story in my novel plays out in 2009, so I needed to keep the songs in the correct timeframe. I am cutting it really close with Through The Trees up to the month where the story takes place. Initially, a search on Google says that the release date was in 2010, but clearly, it is not as can be seen on the time stamp for this video. The song was also featured in the 2009 movie, Jennifer's Body. The actual release date of the song on Apple Music was in 2010.
This is a difficult reveal of when the song is played. Let us just say that Owen is in Nicole's room looking at a photo when this song plays.
Oh, wow! Looking at all of the songs and scenes, it appears that I wrote a romance novel?! I promise that this is not the case, but there should be something that appeals to everyone in this first book of, hopefully, a series of Owen Able novels.
The End of Heartache by Killswitch Engage (2004)
Yes, I do not like the image on the cover, but the song quickly became one of the most heart-wrenching songs for me ever. I know, I know. It is hard to believe. But it really expresses Owen's anger and sadness at that point of time in the story.
This song plays on a jukebox of an underground club where Owen wreaks total destruction.
Collide by Dishwalla (2005)
Dishwalla is quite an odd name and even more so because my mother-in-law used to call dishwashing liquid dishwalla. The song, on the other hand, really grew on me and I felt it fit the mood of the scene in my story very well.
I do not wish to say too much about the scene where this song is mentioned, other than it is played during Nicole and Owen having dinner. Saying more may just give away some spoilers.
Restless Heart by John Parr (1992)
Who can forget Restless Heart at the end of The Running Man movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger? The movie was based on a novel written by Richard Bachman which was actually a pen name for Stephen King. One of my favorite actors and writers of all time, why would I not have watched this?
Anyway, enough of the nostalgia.
Almost at the end of the book, Owen and Nicole throw a party. Two of their favorite songs are played. This is the one and the other one is:
Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard (1987)
If there ever was a song that got me up on my feet, then it is this one. I tried to think of a song that would get the crowd going, and then Pour Some Sugar On Me just dawned on me.
This is the last song that is mentioned in my book and oddly enough, the tally is a perfect ten. I did not plan on having ten songs in my book. Heck, I have not even planned to have any songs in my book but it happened.
This concludes the music soundtrack in Owen Able and The Two-Headed Dragon.
My hope, if you decide to read my book, is that the songs will give you that bit extra perception of the mood I am trying to create in a scene. Even if it just brings back pleasant memories or good times with friends and old flames.
